Katy Newitt, accompanied by her sighted guide Rebecca Janaway sprinted over the finish line of the 42km in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon 2009 on Friday 16th January 2009. There were many supporters and friends shouting encouragement and welcoming them at the end as Katy set a Dubai record to become the first blind person to run the full marathon in the Emirate. It was a really emotional moment as they sprinted across the finish line. Nerves prior to the race due to a painful injury in her foot were unfounded as both Katy and Rebecca beat their target time of completing the gruelling course in under 5 hours. This was Katy’s second marathon and she also beat the time she took to complete the London Marathon in 2005. It was Rebecca’s personal best time too.
Foresight had a team of about 60 runners in the 3km,10km and 42km races all raising awareness and funds, including a large group of staff from Magrudy’s, who all ran in the distinctive Foresight orange. “Standard Chartered has been really supportive for the last 5 years and there is always a terrific atmosphere on the day”, said Catherine Wallwork of Foresight.
There was a fabulous group of volunteers who helped on the Foresight stand and experienced four seasons in one day ranging from torrential rain and very chilly conditions to bright Dubai sunshine.
Thank you to everyone who made this terrific day possible. You can still sponsor Katy online or contact us to make a donation.
