Stem Cell Research
Andrew Lotery, MD FRCOphth, Professor of Ophthalmology
Southampton University, United Kingdom
2 year duration
Exciting reports have recently appeared in the press regarding the work at University College London and their successful restoration of sight to mice with damaged retinas by the transplantation of stem cells.
Foresight's decision to fund a project into stem cell research at Southampton University builds on this information and takes a further step towards making this treatment available to humans.
The research focuses on the development of stem cell therapies and organotypic cultures for the treatment of Retinitis Pigmentosa and Age-Related Macular Degeneration. The first stage of research was completed in two years.
Results were presented at the annual Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meeting in Florida in May 2008.
Foresight has committed funding to continue this work for a further two years until 2010.
